HOWTO: Professional-Looking Scrolled Credits in Cinelerra

Introduction

Titles support in the Cinelerra video editor is very limited. In particular, text styles can only be applied to all the text as a whole, since the Cinelerra title plugin is not based on a WYSIWYG editing pane.

This page documents a straightforward procedure for getting much more professional-looking scrolling credits to appear in Cinelerra-edited videos.

About Scrolling Credits

Professional credits often appear in several sections. With each section, there is a centred boldface title, such as 'Cast (in order of appearance). Below the title is one or more individual credits in 2 columns, with the role right-justified in the left column, and the person or agency left-justified in the right column, for example:

Cast (in order of appearance)
Taxi Driver Andy Griffiths
Policewoman Mary MacInnes

Procedure Summary:

  1. Create credits in an OpenOffice.org Writer document
  2. Export to a PDF file
  3. Import PDF into gimp, delete black background, save as a transparent PNG
  4. Import PNG into a Cinelerra project
  5. Scroll the credits using keyframed automated camera zoom
  6. Render out to a video file
